There was a boat builder in Georgia name Robb White who used yellow poplar(Liriodendron tulipifera) for glassed and epoxied strip boats. Meranti Hydrotech will last for how long? Who knows? 5 years? 10?.ġ00? (I doubt that, but it doesn't matter because I'll be a dead mf anyway). For others that's not such a big deal.īut that's what's happening. Almost anyway.įor some that is sad sad news. Also consider MDO.Įlse bag the wood idea altogether and use honeycomb core. If (for what ever reason) you do not want to use that, consider (still) AA or AB or AC marine fir.īut be prepared to be be dissapointed. The cheapest good deal plywood is now Meranti Hydrotech. Stuart got into this business only a few short years behind me. (totally cool guy) has been building driftboats with MDO for approximately the past 80 years That's 35 bucks a sheet.more or less.ģ/8" is the thinnest MDO you can buy (as far as I know). One not-well-known alternative is MDO sign painter's plywood. Okoume is.flimsy and expensive all at the same time. I can get (so called) AA marine fir shipped in to my local lumber yard for about 40 bucks a sheet. Merani Hydrotech is fine.probably the best thing out there right now. I don't even know what Meranti Hydrotech costs. I've nailed that crap onto a thousand roofs in my life. Those monikers is an abomination, at least compared to what it used to be.īut that same fir plywood is at least still usable. That much I pronounce with confidence.ĪA AB and AC Marine grade fir used to be great stuff. I would love it there is more than I know.ĬDX is a bad idea. This is a good question Mark, and I hope NOT to shut off discussion by being the first to answer.
